During the Poroferia festival weekend the youth from Finland participated to video editing workshop in Oulu. Petra and Salla couldn’t come but the others were present. On a workshop they learned the basics of video editing and how to make dvd-menus with Premier elements editing program.

The workshop started with the Siida museum´s presentation of museum´s role in Sámi youth project presented by Arja Hartikainen, Tarmo Jomppanen and Sari Valkonen. We also had a student guest Leena Mattanen from Giellagas institute that is a department of Sámi language and culture in University of Oulu. She told her experiences of studying there and the wide range of fields to study.

After Siida and Giellagas institutes presentations we watched reference films made by youth of Canadian first nations. Later we looked through together material youth had filmed during the project. With that material they started learning editing.

In the evening youth had a filming task at Poroferia market. They practised filming a moving object which was in this case a reindeer. On a following morning they started editing a scene of material filmed in market. For the lack of time it became their homework.

On a Sunday afternoon we gave an interview to Yle Sáme TV at Poroferia market. From the youth Mihkal and Ola were interviewed. They told about their role in the Sami youth project, why they have partisipated and what have been doing in the project.

From project workers point of view the workshop was a success. I finally got a chance to see what the youth have been filming during the past few months. The themes of their documents are about documenting their everyday life´s, hobbies and travel´s. Some are making video diaries and interviewing their family members.

Now they all have skills to start editing. Some are continuing filming on a summer too and work in project until the end of July. Youth has more clearly in their mind what subjects their document´s are going to handle and how films are made. With each we made an individual updated timetables and video plans and desided that the next step in their working process is to write the final script.
