TS: “What does it mean to be a Skolt Sámi?”

SH: Well, I don’t really know, but it is a bit like art or so; it’s almost like an artistic culture, different.”

TS:  “Artistic in what way?”

SH: “I don’t know. It’s hard to explain, but hmm, it’s wonderful and dignified, impressive, and so on.”

TS: How is it to live as a Skolt Sámi in Kerava?”

SH: “Sometimes maybe a bit weird, when you start thinking about how you’ve ended up living there. But, on the other hand, I don’t stand out from the other people, either. But when I mention it [being Skolt Sámi] when talking with people, everyone admires me: Oh, how wonderful!”

Sunna Karjalainen

Kesäloma pohjoisessa (Summer vacation up North) is a film of Sunnas summer trip with her family from her hometown Oulu to Utsjoki at her grandmothers house and there up to Alta Norway.

TS: What would you want the school to teach about Sámi culture?”

SK: “That the Sámi don’t live today without a phone and a computer. It´s really not like that anymore. That the schools would teach what life is like today and not how it was in the past. That there would be more information than just two lessons. After compulsory schooling, you know more about the Irish, for example, than about the Sámi. Wouldn’t it be more essential to know about Sámi culture than about cultural differences in Great Britain?”

“I hope that the project can somehow give new material for the schools, too, and also encourage other young people to show their roots.”
